NE Fife Phonebox Gets New Life to Save Life

MEDIA RELEASE

An innovative initiative by villagers in the NE Fife village of Letham has seen a tired unused phonebox transformed into a key piece of lifesaving First Aid Equipment.

The phonebox in the centre of the rural village had rarely been used in the last 10 years and was falling into disrepair. Working with the Community Heartbeat charity, villagers and community groups raised over £2,500 to refurbish the box and install and maintain a publically accessible defibrillator.

In cases of cardiac arrest, speedy access to a defibrillator can increases the chances of survival by 40%.

Provost Jim Leishman MBE will formally open the Defibrillator at 9.45am, Saturday 12th December 2015. The Mary Leishman Foundation, set up in memory of his late wife, made a sizeable donation boosting the community fundraising effort.

David Hamilton, Chair of Monimail Community Council said, “This project really caught the imagination of villagers and community groups based in Letham. Hundreds of pounds of private donations, group donations and a series of fundraisers including a heart-themed childrens’ bake-off and sponsored massage have made this possible.

“Most of the refurbishment work has been carried out by volunteers and all of us in the village have a real sense of pride and ownership. Although no specialist training is required to use the defibrillator, the Community Council is arranging a CPR and basic first aid classes for locals in the New Year.”
