Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award 2011

In this years Scotsman/Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards, our very own Tom Morton has made the shortlist of 4 contending for the prestigious Environmental Award.
Tom has built one of Scotland’s leading environmental design practices, Cupar based, Arc.
Tom’s new buildings progress the agenda for affordable and healthy Eco-homes. His work on NHTT’s CaRB project, is used as a best practice model by the Energy Saving Trust. His major report on using plants to protect buildings is to be published by Historic Scotland this month.

King George V Park, Letham

On Wednesday 5th October 2011, King George V park was finally re-opened after a 3 1/2 year project to breathe some new life into a tired old park. Master of Cermonies was David Hamilton, Chair of the Community Council but the actual cutting of the ribbon was done by Cllr Andrew Arbuckle. The stars of the afternoon were however the dozens of children from the Secret Garden Playgroup and Letham Primary who joined in the fun cheering on the many people who had made the project happen.

The park now has a great range of play equipment and adult exercise machines but the highligt has to be the clay shelter that replaces the rotting wooden shelter.

This was a superb example of multi-agency and community funding coming together to make Letham a better place. Attached is the “Fairy Tale of Letham Park” which includes all the people involved in the project.

Additionally Peter Cuthbert from Angle Park deserves a special mention for his help and supply of the shelter building materials.

100th Cupar Flower Show 100

Horticulturalists in Fife will be congregating in the Corn Exchange in Cupar next weekend to display some of the best flowers and vegetables in the area. Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the Cupar Flower Show has arranged a special 2-day extravaganza over the weekend of Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August.

With talks, demonstrations and trade stands being a new feature at the event, the main attractions will still be the fantastic variety of exhibitions in flowers, fruit and vegetables, floral art, handicrafts and needlework, baking, photography, wine making and preserves. There will also be exhibits by the younger generation showing off their skills at designing/painting, cookery and flower planting and arranging, also a special class for the primary schools in the local area to create a collage on an “eco-gardening theme”, and a kids group competition to create a “superhero from recycled materials”.

It’s not too late to enter! If you enjoy gardening; have a nice patio ornament or hanging basket, maybe a collection of flowers, grow your own fruit or vegetables then please give consideration to entering this very special flower show. This is an amateur show that is open to everyone, of all ages and experience. The schedule can be downloaded from www.cuparflowershow.co.uk – entries can be taken right up until 9.30pm on Friday 26th August in the Corn Exchange, Cupar. We are trying to encourage as much interest and participation from as far afield as possible, so if you have any family or friends that you think might be interested in exhibiting or attending the Show, please forward this email or tell them to visit the show website or call Wanda Wheelans on 01334 654648 for more details.

JIM McCOLL will open the show and host a gardener’s question time along with Leslie Bisset and Peter Christopher later on Saturday afternoon. If you have any gardening questions, then here is your chance to ask the experts. If you have any plants, weeds or others that you wish to be identified, then these should be handed in to the Secretary prior to 1.30pm on Saturday; items MUST be placed in a sealed polythene bag to help prevent the spread of disease to exhibits within the show.
There’s a full programme of talks, presentations and continuous craft demonstrations throughout the weekend, as well as trade stands covering gardening services, societies and other products.

The Show is open to the public from 10am-6pm on Saturday 27th and from 11am until 5pm on Sunday 28th August in the Corn Exchange, Cupar. Admission is only £3, Concessions £2 – tickets are available for pre-sale from Scotts of Cupar, Bonnygate or from Wanda, or entry at the door. Still in the dark

After further discussions with the Council. I have been assured the solution to the 6 month lack of lights in Letham is near. First of all they didn’t know that they had gone out again because the ‘light scout’ doesn’t work during the summer and nobody had complained! Now that the problem is known, a faulty fuse has been replaced. There is however still a problem on School Brae and this should be fixed by Scottish Power soon.
Finally, the now defunct control box on The Row is to be removed very soon. How difficult was that?

More on the lights

Scottish power have now fixed the fault but have left the lights burning 24hrs (so as to maintain lighting during the night). The lights will be on 24hrs until we agree on where the pillar is to go. The council asked about siting the pillar in the hedges as discussed below but they said that was a non-starter so they have suggested an alternative location which is shown on the attached map in turquoise (opposite the bus stop).. Let me know what you think.

Save RAF Leuchars Campaign

RAF Leuchars supports 1900 direct and indirect jobs contributing around £60 million of income annually to the Fife economy. A number of our residents are employed at the base and the positive effect that the base has on businesses andtowns throughout North East Fife is enormous.

1. First Minister Alex Salmond will be visiting Leuchars for a question & answer session on Friday, 11 Feb 2011 at 3.30pm in the Henderson Hall, Leuchars – all welcome.

2. Sign the Online Petition: www.SaveRafLeuchars.org.uk – NB although a LibDem petition, this has full cross-party support.

3. A paper petition to download and copy is attached, if preferred. We have been told there is no set deadline for petition signatures but ideally we would look to the end of Feb/mid March for completion.

Although a decision on whether the Base will close has now been delayed until May, time remains of the essence.

School Brae

After many years of campaigning , it looks like the adoption of School Brae by Fife Council took a big step forward this week. A planning application by The

Rotherams has now been approved subject to land being offered to the council to create a turning circle- a key requisite to allow adoption to take place. Finally the prospect of having road maintenance and some degree of gritting in winter looks possible. The community will also benefit from the gift of some woodland, further details will be posted on this site in the future.
