Travel Survey Results

Last month we asked residents to complete a Travel Survey . The results are as below from 41 respondents…

Which of the following places would you consider commuting to by bus if the times worked?

Would you use buses in the evening and late at night (esp at weekends) in any of the following situations?

If you could have one bus wish what would it be….

  • Subsidised bus fares to encourage more use
  • To have buses that allow people to get to train stations/cities and get to work on time.
  • More regular services to Cupar and Ladybank, there are so few that the current 64 is barely useful at all.
  • A more regular 64
  • To be able to get on a bus to or from Letham without having to wait for hours or having to walk across the main roads to Bow of Fife
  • Reinstate express service to/from Dundee, stopping at the Railway Station. If it can’t come from Glenrothes owing to Stagecoach needing to serve Cupar, could M&W run a commuter service starting in Auchtermuchty/Strathmiglo – Dundee? Would think it could take a few cars off the road. I could read and think on the journey, instead of just driving.
Regular bus service at same time each hour.
  • I’m 12 years old and my independence has been taken. We live in a village where there’s no shops nothing for my age group and a community who rarly even speak. My wish is to have the bus back hourly so I can have my independence back. I can safely go meet my friends without having to be hours at each side of it. It’s like living in a box in letham without taking away the hourly bus.
  • Service times in and out of Letham available twice hourly.
  • Reinstatement of bus connecting to Dundee train (Cupar/Ladybank) after Secret Garden nursery at 4.30pm. I now need to pick him up an hour and a half early or wait hours in the cold park for the next one.
  • A return of the express Dundee bus.
  • Faster bus between Letham, Cupar and St Andrews
  • A better service, we drive to Letham and elsewhere due to necessity but my kids prefer taking the bus
  • Hourly service that runs on time
  • Regular hourly
  • An overall more PRACTICAL bus service.
  • Letham to cupar to st Andrews (canongate side) every hour in time to get kids to nursery/ school eg 8:15 am and 915am and pick up 4:15 and 5:15. Don’t know school times
  • Cheaper fares
  • More regular buses, like ever half hour to more places
  • All 64 buses stopped in Letham village ie hourly each direction as in the past
The x54 to Dundee being reinstated
  • “That the flexi bus service was more accessible as I work in Letham and my village (Brunton) doesn’t have a bus service.
  • Maybe a more relevent point is that the bus service at the start and end of the day could be improved for getting more children to the nursery via buses to cut down on traffic in Letham at these times.”
  • That they were more frequent again
  • 64
  • One bus per hour
  • More frequent
  • Reinstated service serving Letham to Dundee and back
  • A service that was good enough (integrated, frequent enough) to actually have an impact on reducing car use and thereby reducing carbon, accidents, congestion and costs for the public.
  • x54
  • To have the bus back every hour. I have a child 12 years old who was using the bus every weekend and school holidays. I feel it’s taken his independence away and has to be either an hour early for plans or an hour late unless we drive him to them. Also the 8am bus as he was going to be using that to get to school. His friends get on it at cupar to travel up to school but unfortunately he can’t as it’s not there now.
  • A bus regular enough to make using it for transport feasible, so at least once an hour
  • Regular service to Dundee

What are the barriers to cycling in this area?

Would you use shared community electric bikes?

Is there anything else you want to tell us about improving transport links in Letham?

  • I would like to see a segregated cyclepath along the A91 from St Andrews to Glenrothes
  • Regarding school Brae, I am really keen that nothing is done to encourage Fife council to close the school. I think the school keeps the village alive and I have two children who I hope will be able to attend the school. Rather than private road signs which could be seen as hostile towards the school, I think, discussed with the school, right of way signs favouring pedestrians between 8:30-9 and 2:45-3.15 should be considered. I take Lydia down to the park between 8:30 and 9 and intend on not moving to the side when walking on school Brae.
  • More public transport is essential. There are not regular enough buses to make bus travel viable.
  • by fixing the potholes before someone gets hurt
  • Public transport is so important for teens and the elderly in day to day life, and also in this day with the climate crisis-how can people use public transport if there isn’t any to take?
  • “I don’t thin there are barriers to cycling in Letham, so far as I am aware.
  • School Brae: none of the above.”
  • Repair school brae so safe for walking and cycling. Keep footpaths cut back in the summer so not unusable
  • I don’t think it would be at all wise to ban parking entirely, or to put up signage with an unwelcoming tone on School Brae. This is the only access point for those travelling from anywhere from the A92 to Letham Primary School, or to Letham Woods to attend Wolf Ways, or The Secret Garden Outdoor Nursery, all of which provide a great community spirit to Letham village, and it is not anyone’s fault that parking is limited. I do understand residents frustration, but I think the onus should be on the Council to maintain the roads and to provide incentives for people to use public transport more, beginning with providing a more frequent and reliable bus service. I think it would also be good to nurture a culture of lift-sharing within the village, as there is the factor of individual responsibility to take into account when it comes to environmentally friendly transport methods and reducing car use, regardless of where you live.
  • Better synergy between the trains in Ladybank and/or Cupar would be beneficial.
  • The 64 service is not sustainable at the moment so it needs to change
  • Hinges on a more frequent and extensive local timetable as well as more thoughtful bus times for train connections
  • I would cycle my kids to letham if there was a cycle lane that was separate from the road.. Either a kerb or different height along that scary road from Howe of fife to letham. I could cycle from cupar to Howe of fife song quiet cycle roads but they run out when you get to Howe of fife. Terrified we will get hit by a car going at 60mph. The risk is too big now I have 2 children. Bear in mind I’m an extremely confident road cyclist, and used to cycle competitively and have national gold medals for cycling. If I think it’s too dangerous then can’t imagine most many ppl would commute that route.
  • Roads need repairs, cars need parking and road use is needed you can’t ban cars from using a access road to a school and homes. People need repairs done to houses, people need to park somewhere, the road are damaged to lack of upkeep and weather, not from cars using the road
  • If there was pavement going yo Melville roundabout and on the road over to bow of fife.
  • I work in Letham and bus changes have massively affected accessibility
  • The 64 is essential, if that is all that can be preserved then it remains better than nothing.
  • “I woukd love to cycle to work in Letham. I have access to an electric bike but the A92 is not safe enough in my opinion.I drive an electric car snd would love to be able to charge my car occasionally. I’d love it if this was through a scheme that benefitted the Village Hall (or similar).”
  • Safe cycle/walking route to Ladybank
  • Getting out of the village for a specified time, is increasingly difficult. The 2 hourly bus service is not enough and people without access to a car must be very frustrated at the current bus service offering.
  • Safe active travel routes (footpaths, cycleways) could be greatly improved and not just by designating existing roads without any improvements. The Bow of Fife road for example should have a dedicated cycle path/ footway to connect to bus routes. Buses should be banned from this route and use the main A91/A92 instead.
  • For hospital and doctors appointments etc.it can now take hours to reach destination and can involve up to three buses with timing difficulties .Taxis are expensive and it appears that the elderly aren’t being considered.
  • Crossing the a92 is a major barrier!
  • State of footpaths could be improved. Many people use roads but can be dangerous
