SOOOOOO excited to bring this amazing collective to the hall! The only issue is how we are going to fit them all on the stage!

Fat-Suit are an exuberant jazz-funk-folk collective hailing from Glasgow. The influence of the modern jazz greats combines with noughties indie guitar riffs, 90s dance sounds, and timeless groove and funk, while their softer side opens up to folk melodies with celtic roots. They embrace a seamless mix of musical styles, with the priority being to evoke MAXIMUM JOY through their supercharged live performance. Equally at home on a late night festival slot, jazz club, concert hall – OR EVEN A VILLAGE HALL IN RURAL FIFE – some recent performance highlights include Love Supreme Jazz Festival, Boomtown, Vsetin Jazz Festival (CZ), Budapest Jazz Club, and Jazzdock (Prague).

Hailed as ‘Ones to Watch’ by Jazzwise magazine, and winners of ‘Best Band’ & ‘Best Album’ at the Scottish Jazz Awards, they embrace a seamless mix of musical styles in a ‘showcase of sonic domination. One to dance at’ (STV).

Their most recent album ’Waifs & Strays’ was recorded live in Glasgow’s Drygate Brewery and took them on a release tour across the UK culminating in a sold out headline show at Celtic Connections.

The energy in the room is going to be IMMENSE!!

Letham Nights #72 – Eva & Keiko

(plus more ceilidhs!)

Saturday 24th June

Doors 7pm

Sometimes the music we need just appears right under our nose – or more exactly, into our ears, from not very far away.

This show is not only our first headline classical recital but also the first for a musician from Letham itself. Eva Lundell is a very popular local music teacher in Letham and across Fife but also a consummate classical violinist & performer in her own right.

This April, Eva returns to Brooklyn to rehearse the repertoire for the evening with her close musical partner & pianist, Keiko Asakawa-Golden. Eva and Keiko are 2/3 of a longstanding ensemble The Savane Trio who came together in Illinois in the mid-90’s and have been playing together on and off ever since. Along with their friend Jacqueline Black, cellist, the trio kicked off their collaboration with a Japanese tour in 1995, followed by recitals and competitions in the Great Lakes region, California, and the Southwest US including a year-long residency in Arizona as part of Chamber Music America’s rural residencies program.

In June, Keiko will join Eva in Scotland on a mini-tour with Letham Nights an unmissable stop on their musical journey.

Each piece in the repertoire will explore and celebrate a personal connection for one or both of the players.

Join us to welcome them both to our village hall stage and enjoy the performance!

Letham Nights #70 – CLR theory + Mima Merrow

2 short weeks Less than a week to go until our first Letham Nights of 2023!

Saturday 11th Feb 2023

Doors 7pm

Still some tickets left – about 40 30 20 to be precise!

Special discounts available for NHS and Key Workers

Letham Nights invites you to COME TOGETHER for a celebration of all our key workers during the pandemic, in particular those on the frontline in the NHS.

Leading the celebration will be new and upcoming band CLR theory.  Read their amazing story…

This project began at the height of the pandemic, with musical voice notes passed back and forth as a way to stay connected – home recorded musical gifts sent from makeshift cupboard studios. As things reopened, Gill Higgins and Hannah Jarrett-Scott invited loved ones to collaborate. The result is WAVES, a captivating record providing community, joy and comfort, in the face of social isolation, exhaustion, challenging communication and mental health. Since launching the album, CLR Theory (just say ‘colour theory’ by the way) have played sold out shows at this year’s Celtic Connections and Waves was chosen by BBC Radio Scotland’s Roddy Hart as his Record of Note.

The duo blend their powerful vocal harmony with bubbling string arrangement and triumphant brass, layered with grounding synth and harmonium drones. At Letham they will perform as a 5-piece with multiple vocal harmonies. They sing fervent lyrics in their honest accents, with beauty and vulnerability. They combine comforting melody and catchy riffs with contrasting swirling discord, creating a captivating sound.

Gill Higgins, an NHS surgeon, was on the frontline of covid care in the ICU in Glasgow. Hannah Jarrett-Scott, an actor-musician (and one of the original cast of the Olivier award-winning Pride & Prejudice Sort Of) unable to ply her trade, worked in a grocery store. They collaborated to start the Scottish branch of charity MedSupplyDrive UK; a grass roots initiative to lobby industries, suppliers and businesses to contribute in a time of crisis. Together, they secured half a million items of PPE and delivered them to the NHS and Social Care. We are proud to say that the Letham Nights team worked alongside them.

We are incredibly proud to present CLR theory in a full band performance, as we continue to rebuild our community music venue.

To open the evening we present the lyrical poetry and beautiful sounds of  Mima Merrow, an Irish singer-songwriter based in Glasgow.

Buy Tickets

Merrow’s sound is a unique blend of alternative folk characterised by longing, sudden changes in direction, and melodies that ache. Fascinated by the relationship between our environments and bodies, her thoughtful lyricism is held together by intimacy, honesty, and stories that challenge her listeners.

Mima released her debut album, Almost Home, in September 2022. It explores the idea of home; where it is, who is allowed there, the rituals and rites of passage that bring it together. Have a wee listen below…

New Year, New Shows!

Happy New Year from Letham Nights!

Here’s what’s what so that you don’t miss out…

Looking Back On 2022

NEW! 2023 Programme

Get Involved! Come to our 2022 AGM (in the pub!)

Looking Back On 2022

It was such a thrill to get back to live music last April, kicking off with a sold-out extravaganza from the bombastic Tom Maguire and the Brassholes. To put things in perspective, the Brassholes’ next show on 27th Jan will be at The Barrowlands!

In June we managed to have our postponed collaboration with Letham Lights with a showing of James Kelman’s Dirt Road to Lafayette in the afternoon, a Q&A with protagonist of the film, Neil Sutcliffe and then a wonderful Cajun/Zydeco gig in the evening with a band specially put together by Neil.

In August, we had our first of two Scotland on Tour shows with Jemima Thewes.  Jemima and drummer Tim Lane were amazing, innovative performers and they put on a belter of a show.

September brought in extraordinary Ghanaian drummers Kakatsitsi. They came to the village and took it by storm, leading drumming, dancing and singing workshops during the day and then a fantastic gig in the evening.

It is quite a boost when you get to host one of the best bands in the country, Breabach, who played in October.  We knew this would be a sell out and it was – weeks in advance.  They were just brilliant.

Finally, the last show of the year was also our 2nd Scotland on Tour gig with Adam Holmes.  Adam presented a mix of old and new songs to create a lovely, warm atmosphere on a cold winter’s night.  An extra bonus was having the amazing Esther Swift open the evening as our first harpist.

Esther Swift

Delighted to say that this show is supported by funding from Scotland on Tour. Look forward to seeing you there!

Tickets are NOW ONLY available from the Scotland on Tour website or from Eventbrite

Adam’s new album Hope Park was released in August to critical acclaim and he has been delighting audiences in venues across the country with his intimate and immersive shows. Here’s a clip from the Tolbooth in Stirling:

If you can’t wait until the show to get one, you can get a copy of the new album here:

https://www.adamholmesmusic.co.uk/hope-park

Adam’s 4 pervious albums, Heirs and Graces, Brighter Still, Midnight Milk and Dreamweaver have cast an impressive shadow across the UK Folk Scene and gained him Scottish Album of the Year Nominations (in 2014, 2017 and 2018) and BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Nominations. His songs have featured widely on national radio and TV.

The second youngest of 8 children raised by his mother in a small flat in Portobello, Adam crafts lyrics that resonate like old folk songs, set to melodies rooted in the haunting slow airs and church hymns that echoed throughout his childhood.

Only in the world of folk music could you imagine the staff at one of the liveliest, smokiest and most famous Folk music pubs in Britain, Sandy Bells, making a space at the end of the bar so that an eight year old child could get the best view of the singers and musicians. But that was the very place that Adam first picked up the skill of learning music by ear.

Age 15, after the death of a close friend and a cascade into drugs and alcohol Adam found his way out through the focus of rapping and producing hip hop. Simultaneously he began to play guitar and write songs and after leaving school and moving into his first flat aged 16 he worked on building sites, trying to pick up an apprenticeship as a joiner.

On the very same day that he was finally offered an apprenticeship aged 19 he received a phone-call offering him a place in the semi finals of the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2009. He chose his place in music and hasn’t looked back since.

Letham Nights is a member of the Green Arts Initiative, an interactive community of Scottish arts organisations working to promote sustainability and reduce their environmental impact – a perfect fit for Letham Nights!

Letham Nights…

Letham Nights began in December 2008.  Our vision is to bring high quality music to our village hall and provide a stage for talent, both local and global.  At the same time we want to promote sustainability and work towards creating a zero carbon village hall. 14 years and over 100 acts later, we have drawn in an audience which now averages 100 in our 120-capacity hall.  We have supported hall improvements so that we now have double glazing, better insulation, renewed wiring and a new efficient boiler.  The events are renowned for their high quality music and the unique, warm and friendly atmosphere.  We really do put on THE BEST SMALL GIGS IN THE WORLD!
