Letham Nights began in December 2008.  Our vision was to bring high quality music to our village hall and provide a stage for local talent.  At the same time we wanted to promote sustainability and work towards creating a zero carbon village hall. 8 years and over 80 acts later, we have drawn in an audience which now averages nearly 100 in our 120-capacity hall.  We have supported hall improvements so that we now have double glazing, better insulation, renewed wiring and a new efficient boiler.  The events are renowned for their high quality music and the unique, warm and friendly atmosphere.  We really do put on THE BEST SMALL GIGS IN THE WORLD!

Tickets and the cost of living

As a not-for-profit voluntary organisation, Letham Nights operates on tight margins, seeking to provide our audience with high quality music and a rich, cultural experience. We are committed to supporting our musicians financially, giving them a decent wage for the art that they share. So it is always appreciated when those who can afford it, pay the full price. 

Concessions

For over 65s, unwaged, students or those with a disability we offer a concession price. For families we offer free entry to under 12s. 

Still too expensive?

We are aware that even with these concessions, some people will not be able to afford to attend.

OPEN MIC!

We are opening the evening with a number of open mic sets. 10 minutes each – and a fee for each performer! There are still a couple of slots available so if you fancy giving it a go then please get in touch using the contact details on this page. We’d love to hear from you!

Jemima and her band create an enveloping and deeply textured fusion of dark songs and bright, deep rhythms. Jemima’s songwriting is inspired by the folk ballad tradition, and layered with grit, tenderness, mischief, humour and wisdom. These cloud-hopping tales are told by warm, powerful vocals and carried on a bed of heavy, playful percussion and strings. With lyrics and melodies that creep up and catch you unawares and beats that get you moving in spirit and body.

Jemima’s debut album “Calling” is out on 9th July with the label Last Night From Glasgow, she is collaborating here with Tim Lane (Hidden Orchestra) on the percussive time lines and Jem Le Lievre on Bass face. A surprisingly big and beautiful sound from such a small team. The effect of this music stays with you long after you have heard it.

The Best Small Gigs In The World!

WAKEY WAKEY, WORLD!

Time to start turning again, you sexy blue marble! There are no words, or maybe there are, let’s see shall we? – Absence makes the heart grow fonder! – Long time, no see! – We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when! – We don’t talk about Bruno… erm, where were we? Oh right… WE’RE BACK, BABY! Dancing shoes dusted and feet keen as mustard, coiffures betowsed (or toupees deloused), ruffles inflated and hips pre-gyrated, here we go again… It’s only blooming Letham Nights Number 65, you absolute flaming saucepots, you!

Yes, here we all came, bleary and care-sodden, emerging from our isolation baskets like dazzled rescue donkeys blinking into the light. “How does this all work again?”, “Who are all these people?”, “Is this five pound note current, or is it from the before-times?”. But nervousness soon gave way to vervousnous and off we sailed into the funky blue yonder…

Opening the re-opening (if you follow) was old friend of Letham Nights, Robbie Ward. Robbie has walked amongst us many times, in several musical incarnations, once solo and several times as part of bands with names too long and varied to list here for reasons of time. On he came with his trademark humility and quiet charm, and gave us just what we needed after all those months of absence; a great big dose of humanity. No one does humanity like Robbie. No misanthrope, he. He casts his anthropological eye over the profound and mundane and turns them into beautiful, moving and hilarious studies of who we are and what makes us tick. From wandering down to Broughty Ferry harbour with a nice ice-cream to the frustration of trying to predict the behaviour of the number 73 bus, Robbie doesn’t miss a detail. It’s a small world, when you say hello, after all.

Tom McGuire and The Brassholes were the last act to play Letham Nights in 2019, so it seemed only fitting that they kick start us into the new era. And here they came, all present and correct, Brassholes to a man, but… where’s Tom? Confusion and anxiety reign… worried shouts (“Tom, Tom, where are you Tom!”)… should someone call the police?… but wait… what’s that under the stage?… racoons?… badgers?… The Upside Down?… OMG, IT’S TOM McGUIRE! He’s been under the stage since 2019, (you see?)! Looking hugely chipper for a man who’s spent over two years in solitary, and with a cry of “I don’t know what year it is, but I know what time it is. IT’S TIME TO ROCK!”, Tom seizes his Fender Starcaster and, white jeans shining beatifically, launches into a family-size slab of hair-funk the like of which the world hasn’t seen for exactly two years and six months. Over the following two sets, Tom and the Brasshole family take us on a stomping, horn-fuelled odyssey into the screeching bowels of G(lasgow)-Funk.

But it’s not only the band who came to rock…

Cut to young Darren, minding his business, throwing some shapes in the crowd, until Tom asks him what he was doing in 2008…

Turns out Darren was playing guitar in 2008…

Turns out he still plays a bit…

Does he want to jump on stage and play a solo, Tom asks…

Yeah, okay, Darren answers…

Well, this could go either way, we think…

Turns out there’s nothing to worry about folks. Darren absolutely shreds it. The axe is still smouldering as he hands it back to Tom. What a moment, what a man!

The dancing, prancing and bonhomie continue unabated until viral hit ‘Ric Flair’ blows the bloody roof off and by the encore, it’s elbows and emotions spilling out all over the dancefloor before we all head off into the spring evening to enjoy the green shoots of new growth. Letham Nights #66 – 25th June – From Letham to Louisiana

A transatlantic session like no other with film, chat and live music from Neil Sutcliffe, star of James Kelman’s Dirt Road To Lafayette – Another collaboration with our sister community cinema group Letham Lights. This midsummer show will bring you an afternoon film, Dirt Road to Lafayette, followed by Q&A with Neil Sutcliffe who plays Murdo, the main protagonist of the film. Neil will then lead an evening gig. He has specially put together a cajun/zydeco/texmex band for the evening and we also hope to be joined for the Q&A by director Kenny Glenaan.

In 2022 we will:

• continue supporting the hall to make more energy improvements,
• keep promoting local music and musicians
• continue to recycle and reuse as much as we can and stock our bar, The Clap and Tipple, with produce from our local bottle shop, Luvians and  sustainable wholesaler, Green City.

And some new things! We will also:

• support the health and well being of our community by increasing collaborations with other local groups and individuals (e.g. the Primary School, the Secret Garden Nursery, Letham Lights – our community cinema and Monimail Makers who promote sustainable living by sharing traditional skills). We have already planted a native hedgerow for wildlife in our local park with all the children and young people in the community.

Letham Nights – The best small gigs in the world!

What’s it all about?

Hi, it’s Roy here.

Letham Nights, our beloved live music initiative, is in danger of folding following its 2-year covid-induced hiatus.  It needs a boost of funds to help it get ahead and be able to fulfil its mission to support musicians, provide high quality acts for a local audience and work towards a zero-carbon future.  With your help we can get it back off the ground again and make it even better.  So I am planning a sponsored An Turas Mor cycle trip.

When I retired a few years ago I was invited to come along on a Thursday to cycle around Fife. This normally involved coffee and cake, sometimes a bacon roll, occasionally a pint. We normally manage around 20-35 miles. A few of the guy’s have bicycles in their DNA and my right knee still gives me gyp. So I decided that an e-bike was the way forward if I were to keep myself from being the fat lad at the back. It was totally the way forward – they are incredible machines.

Now I’m ready for a bigger challenge.  In 2019 we discussed a big trip on the bikes. ‘An Turas Mor’ fitted the bill for May 2020.  However, along with Letham Nights, the trip was put on hold as Covid19 disrupted the whole world.

As a result of the two year C-word hiatus together with some other problems (a new ticketing system; hall capacity issues resulting from our toilet facilities; out of date bar stock) Letham Nights finds itself short of ready cash and in danger of folding. We would normally have the ticket sales money in our hands pre-show but our ticket payout now comes seven days after the event.  And although we actually have plenty of toilets and it has never been a problem, the facilities in the hall currently don’t meet the building standards required and so our audience has been reduced.  Reduced audience = not enough money to run events = no Letham Nights.  All of this leaves us in a pretty pickle.

Hence the sponsored cycle.  I know that you know the value of Letham Nights.  Covid has starved us of culture and it would be a great shame to see it fold.  With your help it can go from strength to strength.

What we can do with your money…

Your pledge of support will help us to:

1. Get ahead! We need to have at least £1k in the bank to run each event, especially now that our ticket payout comes after the event.
2. Buy new stock – our supplies of drinks and snacks are out of date post-Covid
3. If necessary, pay for portaloos so that we can increase the hall capacity and sell more tickets.
4. Fund better fees for support acts.
5. Provide support for extended events with daytime music workshops to support the young or vulnerable in our community.
6. Offer opportunities to individuals interested in creating audio-visual content for Letham Nights or learning about running events.
7. Help support the village hall towards a zero-carbon future.

More About An Turas Mor

An Turas Mor is a 364 mile, mainly off road/mountain bike ride from Kelvingrove Gallery to Cape Wrath. We’ll be using the West Highland Way, the Rob Roy Way, Sustrans Cycle Routes, Forestry Commission and Hydro Electric access roads. The cycle run is now planned for the 3rd of May 2022, finishing on the 11th May. 

The six of us plan to take nine days to complete the trip. The total mileage will be 364. 

There will no support vehicle, we are carrying everything we need for the trip, staying at B&B’s and the likes. 

All expenses will be paid by each of us meaning all the money I raise will go to Letham Nights.

Day 1  47 miles from Kelvingrove to Strathyre

Day 2  52 miles  to Bridge of Gaur

Day 3  59 miles  to Fort Agustus

Day 4  31 miles  to Struy – this might be very hilly.

Day 5  38 miles  to Aultguish – hills again

Day 6  38 miles  to Rosehall – guessing hilly!

Day 7  59 miles  to Durness

Day 8  27 miles  to Cape Wrath and back to Durness – we deserve a short day!

Day 9  13 miles from Crask to Lairg, from where we plan to get the train home.

An Turas Mor is in early May and our first gig back with Tom McGuire and the Brassholes is on the 23rd April, you’ll have spotted the fly in the ointment.

Tom Maguire & The Brassholes played Letham Nights back in November 2019. Little did we know that they would be the last band to perform at Letham Nights for a full two years! Nor that the band members would mysteriously disappear and we would discover them locked in the village hall, surviving there, under the stage, until it was safe to come out again!

Well, they are ready now and have agreed to be the first band to mark the return of Letham Nights. We can’t wait – sweet funk ‘n soul from your favourite village hall!

New Ticketing System

Up to now, our ticketing system, using only bank transfer or cheques, could best be described as ‘quaint’ or ‘charming’. Letham Nights is a member of the Green Arts Initiative, an interactive community of Scottish arts organisations working to promote sustainability and reduce their environmental impact – a perfect fit for Letham Nights!

Run by Creative Carbon Scotland and Festivals Edinburgh since 2013, the Green Arts Initiative supports Scottish arts organisations to be at the forefront of growing an environmentally sustainable Scotland.

Letham Nights…

Letham Nights began in December 2008.  Our vision was to bring high quality music to our village hall and provide a stage for local talent.  At the same time we wanted to promote sustainability and work towards creating a zero carbon village hall. 8 years and over 80 acts later, we have drawn in an audience which now averages nearly 100 in our 120-capacity hall.  We have supported hall improvements so that we now have double glazing, better insulation, renewed wiring and a new efficient boiler.  The events are renowned for their high quality music and the unique, warm and friendly atmosphere.  We really do put on THE BEST SMALL GIGS IN THE WORLD!

Are you desperate to get back to live music? We certainly are! And we are working our way back to you, babe! Over the past few weeks we have been building an exciting programme for 2022 and, fingers crossed, it will be ready to go very soon! To get there, here are a couple of ways you can help…

We are in the process of finalising a stonking programme of shows for 2022 starting in April. At the moment we are feeling confident that these will go ahead and we hope you too will feel confident to come out and support. Thank you to everyone who has contacted us over the past two years to let us know you have missed our unique village hall gigs.

Now, get these dates in your diary!:

23rd April will see the return of a Letham Nights favourite. You will not be disappointed! Look out for announcements and the ticket link soon.

25th June We will continue to innovate through further collaborations with our sister community cinema group Letham Lights, with a midsummer show which will bring you an afternoon film, followed by Q&A with the main protagonist of the film who will then lead an evening gig. Announcement soon!

15th October – look out for another exciting film/music collaboration

We are working on further dates for late summer and beyond. Woohoo!

New Ticketing System

Up to now, our ticketing system, using only bank transfer or cheques, could best be described as ‘quaint’ or ‘charming’. COVID-19 has of course put paid to all our plans below. While we are gutted not to be able to bring you these shows, we know that the important thing at the moment is to stay safe to save lives. 2019 was our Year of Funk and we hosted 3 funkalicious acts in post-punk funk outfit, Boots for Dancing, Edinburgh-based funksters James Brown is Annie and finally, Glasgow’s finest funkateers, Tom McGuire and the Brassholes. It was a blast!

Plans for 2020 have taken a while to fall into place but we are now delighted to announce our next 3 acts for April, June and September…

Thursday 9th April – Devon Sproule and Marker Starling – 7pm CANCELLED

Devon Sproule returns to Letham Nights after a gap of 7 years and we are excited to hear her new stuff and maybe some old favourites too. We also welcome, from Toronto, the excellent Marker Starling. Saturday 27th June – Neil Sutcliffe and Friends – Dirt Road to Lafayette CANCELLED

Ever since the success of our 50th celebration collaboration with Letham Lights, when we did a film/gig thing, we have hankered after the perfect film/music combo to repeat it. And so here it is, the beautiful Dirt Road to Lafayette in the afternoon, Q&A after the film with director Kenny Glenaan and accordionist Neil Sutcliffe, who acted the main protagonist in the film. Then in the evening, music from Neil and friends. What a scoop! Just perfect. More information soon >>

After a gap of 7 years we welcome back one of our favourite Letham Nights artists…

Devon returns to the UK this April as she tours her upcoming album Pink Noise and we have managed to persuade her to squeeze in a show at Letham Nights. Woohoo!

Devon Sproule is a Canadian/American musician living in rural Virginia, raised on eco-villages near Kingston, Ontario and Louisa, Virginia.  The 33-year-old, in addition to being a musician, is a high school drop-out, a mother, a birder, and a student of Deaf Culture and sign language.  She has been married to producer Paul Curreri for 10 years.

Devon Sproule’s music welcomes the magical and the tangible.  It celebrates human complication in the language of nature. It is North American music with weirdo roots.

Devon will be joined on tour by Toronto based Marker Starling

After recording and performing for many years as Mantler, Toronto’s Chris A. Cummings renamed himself Marker Starling in 2012. A solo performer for much of his career, Cummings became known for his signature Melancholy Party Jams, played on a Wurltizer electric piano, with drum machine accompaniment.

Cummings’ will be sharing sounds from his soon to be released ninth record HIGH JANUARY, recorded in the UK and produced by Sean O’Hagan (The High Llamas, Stereolab)
